History OF Barrackpore

300 years ago Barrackpore was called Chanak village. But how is the Barrackpore from Chanak?

 Barrackpore was under "Saptamgram pargana". The ruler of the "Saptagram pargana" was Bakul Uddin Barbak Shah and the first soldier's barracks to be built in here during the company's times. To retain this both memory, Chanak's new name is Barrcakpur. Even Lord Wellesley's place became a terrible choice.

MANGAL PANDEY PARK

In 1798, Barrackpore was a scene of some credit for starting the Indian Rebellion. It was in this barrackpore that the first sepoy revolt was started by the hand of Mangal Pand. To commemorate his demise, a park called 'Sahid Mangal Pandey Udyan' was opened on the banks of the Hooghly River.

  The first zoo in India and also Asia was built in Barrackpore, 16 miles from Kolkata,probably the fourth zoo in the world where the general public had no access.The zoo, built by Lord Wellesley in the 19th century, is now known as 'Barrackpore Chiriamore' . In 1800, a British-style orchard was established at Barrackpore on the banks of the Ganges.Which was called Barrackpore Park at that time. That park is the present Latbagan. While the work was going on in the park, the palace was built near the banks of the Ganges to stay temporarily. The palace was not finished and later the two-storey house became the Government House in Barrackpore. The then Governor of Calcutta, Wellesley, built a road from Shyambazar to Barrackpore, now known as BT Road, for easy access to his favorite park house in Barrackpore. 

Even the present Sahebbagan in Barrackpore is the place where the Nilkar Saheb's lived, and the name of this place has been changed to "Sahebbagan" following the name of that Sahib. The history of Sahebbagan started with indigo cultivation. Indigo cultivation was forced by the farmers here. There is also a history of a few places in Barrackpore, there are- Gandhi Museum, Gandhighat, Arnapurna

 Temple, Hanuman Temple, and Nanda and Dulal Temple.

300 বছর আগে ব্যারাকপুরকে চাণাক গ্রাম বলা হত। তবে কীভাবে চানক থেকে ব্যারাকপুর?

 ব্যারাকপুর ছিল "সপ্তমগ্রাম পরগনা" এর অধীনে। "সপ্তগ্রাম পরগনা" এর শাসক ছিলেন বকুল উদ্দিন বারবাক শাহ এবং কোম্পানির সময়ে এখানে প্রথম নির্মিত সৈনিকের ব্যারাক। এই উভয় স্মৃতি ধরে রাখতে চাণকের নতুন নাম বারবাকপুর। এমনকি লর্ড ওয়েলেসলির জায়গাটি একটি ভয়াবহ পছন্দে পরিণত হয়েছিল।

 1798 সালে, ব্যারাকপুর ভারতীয় বিদ্রোহ শুরু করার জন্য কিছু কৃতিত্বের একটি দৃশ্য ছিল।এই ব্যারাকপুরেই প্রথম মঙ্গল পান্ডের হাত ধরে  সিপাহী বিদ্রোহের সূচনা হয়রছিলো । তাঁর ত্যাগের স্মরণে হুগলি নদীর নির্মলতায় 'শহীদ  মঙ্গল পান্ডে উদ্যান' নামে একটি পার্ক খোলা হয়েছিল। 

কলকাতা থেকে ১৬ মাইল দূরে ব্যারাকপুরে ভারতে এবং এশিয়ার প্রথম চিড়িয়াখানাটি নির্মিত হয়েছিল, এটি সম্ভবত বিশ্বের চতুর্থ চিড়িয়াখানা যেখানে সাধারণ মানুষের প্রবেশাধিকার ছিল না।

ঊনিশ শতকে লর্ড ওয়েলেসিসের তৈরি সেই চিড়িয়াখানা যে জায়গায় আছে সেটি এখন ব্যারাকপুর চিড়িয়ামোড় নামে পরিচিত।  ১৮০০ সালে ব্যারাকপুরে গঙ্গা নদীর তীরে তৈরি করা হয় একটি বিলেতি ধাজের বাহারি উদ্যান।যাকে তৎকালীন সময় বলা হত ব্যারাকপুর পার্ক ।  সেই পার্ক বর্তমানের লাটবাগান। পার্কে  কাজ যখন চলছিল তখন আস্থায়ি ভাবে থাকার জন্যে গঙ্গার তীরে ঘেঁষে বানানো শুরু হয় প্রাসাদ। প্রাসাদ আর শেষ হয়নি পরে দোতালা বাড়িটি হয়ে উঠলো ব্যারাকপুরের গভারর্মেন্ট হাউস। তৎকালীন কলকাতার গভর্নর ওয়েলেসিস তার প্রিয় ব্যারাকপুরের পার্ক বাড়িটিতে সহজে যাতায়াতের জন্য  বানিয়ে ফেললেন শ্যামবাজার থেকে ব্যারাকপুর পর্যন্ত টানা রাস্তা, য এখন বি.টি রোড নামে পরিচিত।

GANDHI GHAT

  এমনকি ব্যারাকপুরের বর্তমান সাহেববাগান সেই জায়গা যেখানে নীলকর সাহেবরা বাস করতেন এবং এই সাহেবের নাম অনুসারে এই জায়গার নাম পরিবর্তন করে "সাহেববাগান" করা হয়েছে। নীল চাষ দিয়ে সাহেববাগানের ইতিহাস শুরু হয়েছিল। নীল চাষ করতে এখানে কৃষকদের  বাধ্য করা হতো। ব্যারাকপুরে আরো কয়েকটি জায়গার ইতিহাসওরয়েছে

 বিশেষত- গান্ধী যাদুঘর, গান্ধীঘাট, অর্নপূর্ণা মন্দির, হনুমান মন্দির এবং নন্দ ও দুলাল মন্দির রয়েছে।
